THE STEINWAYS / THE PEABODYS
Irreconcilable Differences Split 7″ (Incessant Drip Records)
![]()
Another day, another drop of the needle. Two mainstays of traditional pop punk put forth a nice slab of wax for your listening pleasure. In general, this is not one of those mega-hit splits, with big, gotta-have-it smash singles. Instead it’s more of an off-the-cuff release with lots of miniture treasures to devour. Believe me, I love my hit singles, but there’s a time for being silly and having fun as well.
In all seriousness though: Grath Madden, please lay off the cigarettes. The Steinways provide us with two cute and snotty jams with “The Worst Song Ever” (nice bass solo!) and “Ice Cream” (nice guitar wankery!). The real sweet spots are in the 2nd and 4th slots though. “Chemical Sugar,” originally by the Japanese pop punkers The Spandecks, is the type of hyper-pop that we crave, and the acoustic “That Sorta Hot Psuedo White Trash Girl Who Used To Work At The Pool Hall” supplies us with more sing-along goodness and the requisiite Steinways humor element.
On the Peabodys side, “We Are Not Ashamed” completes a holy trinity of pop punk pride songs alongside MTX’s “Dumb Little Band” and the Copyrights’ “Cashiers.” The band then strays from the punk side of the tracks, (if I recall correctly Eric Peabody is living much more comfortably in power pop town these days) and tunes like “You Don’t Understand” and “Don’t Blame Me” emit a distinct sonic resemblance to skinny ties and/or the Undertones. The Peabodys balance their side of the 7″ with an acoustic track of their own called “Haircut of Doom.” It’s fun little ditty that you can put next to the other dozen Peabody nerdpunk classics.
